Opening for an Apprentice Lineman

The specific purpose of the Apprentice Lineman position is to serve as an apprentice to a Journeyman Lineman in the construction and maintenance of the Cooperative’s electric distribution system. The individual in this trainee position must understand that in order to remain in the position, he/she will be required to meet training and educational requirements which will enable them to progress to Journeyman Lineman within a reasonable time frame.
  1. Under supervision, shall perform all necessary activities in the construction and maintenance of “de-energized” and “energized” overhead and underground distribution lines in the most safe, efficient and effective manner.
  2. Is encouraged to use initiative and judgment in making decisions, remembering that the Cooperative’s best interest can be affected by his/her actions. He/she is encouraged to make suggestions for the improvement of operations and efficiency.
  3. Should have an effective working knowledge of the construction, maintenance and operation of a rural electric cooperative’s distribution lines, both overhead and underground, including but not limited to, the installation of meters, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, sectionalizers, oil circuit and vacuum reclosers, oil circuit breakers, arrestors, and switches.
  4. Should have a sound knowledge of RUS construction units and specifications, National Electric Safety Code, OSHA rules and Cooperative policies and procedures.
  5. Must have a sound knowledge of the proper and safe use of vehicles, tools, equipment and material used in line construction and maintenance of both energized and de-energized distribution lines.
  6. Should remember that he/she is accountable to the management of the Cooperative for the efficient performance of his/her responsibilities and that, although some of the responsibilities may be delegated or assigned to another person, the accountability cannot be. 
  7. Verifying that vehicles, tools and equipment are properly used and kept in safe working condition.
  8. Assisting supervisors in inspecting completed work to assure adherence to established RUS standards, codes and practices and verifying that any deficiencies are corrected.
  9. Providing and coordinating the necessary supportive services with other departments of the Cooperative with continuing emphasis on the nature of and importance of the supportive relationships required for achieving an efficient and effective operations.
  10. Accurately and timely reporting of daily time, material or other forms coincident to administrative or department functions.
  11. Attend training and/or courses relating to area of work (overnight stays may be required).
  12. Provide efficient courteous service to members and the general public.
  13. Must be respectful and courteous to fellow employees and management.
  14. Performs all other such duties as may be assigned by the Operations Manager or his/her designee.
  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Successful completion of four (4) year apprentice lineman program required.
  3. Submit to and successfully pass a physical examination and/or drug screen at any time requested by the Cooperative.  
  4. Must have (or acquire) and maintain up-to-date CPR and Standard First Aid Certifications.
  5.  Have (or acquire within 90 days of employment) and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  6. Mandatory “Crew on Watch” Duty with mandatory overtime.
  7. Maintain a personal telephone service.
  8. Reside within twenty-five (25) miles of the Cooperative office where reporting to work.
  9. Inside and outside work under various weather conditions and subject to irregular hours and overtime.
  10. Job may necessitate heavy lifting and strenuous tasks including but not limited to lifting and carrying of heavy objects, considerable walking and standing, some pulling, pushing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching
